Brick
Group steps into a named folder on the canvas so big chatbots stay easy to read.
What it does#
A Brick is a named, colored folder for steps on the canvas, for sections such as Booking, Prices or Contact details. It only tidies the canvas: your bot runs exactly the same, step by step. Customers never see it.
Use bricks when a chatbot gets big and the canvas is hard to follow.
Set it up#
- 1
Select the steps
On the canvas, select the steps that belong together, then click Group into brick in the bar that appears (or press Cmd+G on Mac, Ctrl+G on Windows). The Start Message step can't go in a brick.
- 2
Or start with an empty brick
With nothing selected, click Brick under Organize in the Steps panel. An empty brick opens, ready for new steps.
- 3
Name it and pick a color
Click the brick card. In the panel on the right, type a Brick name and choose a Color. The panel also lists Steps in this brick and its Exits.
- 4
Open it to edit the steps
Click Open or double-click the card. Edit the steps as usual. Entry and Exit markers show the connections that come in from, or go out to, the rest of the bot. Click Back or Main flow to return.
Lead out of a brick with the Exit node#
- 1
Open the brick
Every brick has an Exit node on the right, marked Connect a step here to leave the brick.
- 2
Connect a step to Exit
Drag the output of the step that should leave the brick onto Exit. You can connect several.
- 3
Connect the brick on the main flow
Go back to Main flow. The brick card shows Exit: 1 step waiting, connect to the next step. Drag that handle to the step that comes next.
Until you connect the card's Exit, those outputs have no next step, just like any unconnected output.
Move, ungroup or delete#
- Move to brick moves selected steps into an existing brick. Move out of brick puts them back on the main flow. Connections stay as they are.
- Ungroup removes the folder and keeps every step and connection.
- Delete brick and steps deletes the folder and the steps inside it. To keep the steps, choose Ungroup instead.
Errors and what you see#
- "The start step and steps already in a brick can't be grouped." Leave Start Message out of the selection. For a step that's already in another brick, use Move to brick.
- "Go back to the main flow to add a brick (bricks can't go inside bricks)." Click Main flow, then add the brick there.
- "No connections leave this brick yet". Nothing inside connects to a step outside. That's fine if the conversation ends inside the brick; otherwise connect a step to Exit.
- "1 step needs attention". A step inside isn't set up fully. Open the brick and fix the step marked with a warning.
- "This brick is empty". Drag steps in from the Steps panel, or drag steps from the main flow onto the brick.
- The bot stops after a step in the brick. Its output waits on Exit: connect the card's Exit handle on the main flow.
